Record Labels

Below are a list of some of the record labels that Strawberry Tongue tends to watch. These labels focus on modern and classic new wave, post-punk, shoegaze, dreampop, emo, goth, electronic and experimental genres. There are many others, but, when we need a music fix, we can sure find something new on one of these labels.

4AD
This is the grand-daddy of all labels for Strawberry Tongue. Forming in the early 80s, they have consistently released a group of artists that are stellar including Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Bauhaus, Belly, Sort Sol, This Mortal Coil, Clan of Xymox and many more that set a tone for ethereal and gothic rock. More recently they have released music from artists such as SOHN, Deerhunter, Future Islands and Ariel Pink.

Bella Union
Formed by Cocteau Twins in 1997, Simon Raymonde took over the reigns in 2000 to focus on the label. Their roster is simply phenomenal. Their catalog includes Beach House, I Break Horses, Lone Wolf, Lanterns on the Lake, Pins and Xiu Xiu.

Diversion Records
Based out of the Chicago area, this up and coming label is “genre fluid” in that they work with a number of artists across a variety of including art rock, synthpop, folk rock and alternative gaze and noise.

Factory Benelux
As part of an informal arrangement with Factory and Les Disques du Crépuscule, FBN has consistently released some of the finest music from the two labels. Strawberry Tongue favorites including Crispy Ambulance, Durutti Column, A Certain Ratio and Section 25 have all seen releases here.

Ghostly International
Focusing on electronic artists, Ghostly was co-founded by the DJ and producer Mathew Dear. Artists include Adult., Phantogram, Solvent, Dauwd, Luisine, Com Truise and KILN. I can always count on Ghostly to expand my mind.

Lady Sometimes
This Italian label that tends to feature dreampop bands was formed by Esmeralda Vascellari. Quite frankly, she is badass. It’s awesome to see a label started by a woman. She only releases music she likes and believes that humans make better choices than market analysis. With her first four bands, I agree wholeheartedly.

Minimal Wave
This record label has gone to great lengths help preserves New Wave from the late 70’s to early 80’s. They have a great catalog and artist information pages.

Mute
Formed by Daniel Miller (The Normal), Mute is another label that releases awesome mixes of music. Tending towards electronic and experimental sounds, they have bands such as New Order, Erasure and depeche Mode in their roster as well as Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire, Fad Gadget, Wir, Add (N) to X, Fever Ray and The Knife.

Temporary Residence
Based out of New York, this long-standing indie label has released some of our very favorite bands such as The Black Heart Procession, Caroline, Explosions in the Sky, Magowai, Three Mile Pilot, Syabrite and Mono. They tend towards post rock, alternative and indie rock groups.

Warp Records
Featuring some of our favorite bands, Warp releases electronic and dance music from artists such as !!! (Chk Chk Chk), Aphex Twin, Brian Eno, Flying Lotus and Lonelady.

We Are the New Underground [WEATNU]
This is a virtual label that specializes in electronic styles, including industrial, ambient, synthpop, electro-punk, post punk, psychedelic folk, shoegaze, instrumental hiphop and much more.
