The Black Heart Procession is a band that was active from 1998 to approximately 2010. The band announced in 2012 they were having a “going out of business” sale on their merchandise site. They cited that BHP was taking an extended break to work on other endeavors.

An indie rock band from San Diego, they combined heartwrenching lyrics, quirky instrumentation and indie rock sensibilities. Regular themes in their songs are isolation, depression and heartache.

The band focused around the work of Pall Jenkins (member of Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects, Pallllap, Ugly Casanova and producer of The Drowning Men) and Tobias Nathaniel (both members of the band Three Mile Pilot). Frequently, they had contributions by Matt Resovich Mario Rubalcaba, Jason Crane, Joe Plummer, Dmitri Dziensuwski and Jimmy LaValle and Matthew Parker.

During the last The Black Heart Procession tour, I went to the show alone, sat in the second row of the Cedar Cultural Center and, unlike the usual, stoic Minnesotans, I wept throughout the duration of the performance. If Pall or Tobias ever read this, you have my personal apologies for making everyone in the room uncomfortable. I was just so overwhelmed by the way they wove beauty and sadness together.

As of this writing, Pall Jenkins is currently working on a project called The Yukon Dreams. The focus of the 11 track album using musical saw in each track. Only two tracks have vocals and according to Pall it is a very dark and trippy record. He is on tour in Europe supporting Kurt Vile.

Strawberry Tongue Radio is pleased to be featuring two tracks from The Black Heart Procession‘s release Blood Bunny Black Rabbit release, Drugs and Devotion along with The Yukon Dreams track On The Water.
