Friday Night Five | April 15, 2016

This week, I am taking a look back at a couple of emerging artists that I have been featuring on Strawberry Tongue’s playlist for a while. Some with newer music, some with tracks that I still just simply adore. You’ll see.

Rive Droite Rive Gauche is a French duo from Bayonne that plays a blend of cold and new wave. They glean inspiration from 80’s post punk bands like The Cure, Kas Product and Depeche Mode. Back in 2014, I quietly added their track “Foggy Day” to the Strawberry Tongue playlist.  With dark themes and somber undertones, Rive Droite Rive Gauche is a band that I constantly find myself going back to listen to, they are simply fantastic. Songs featured: “Foggy Day,” “Obsession,” and “Terminal 2.”

Andy Elwell is a Minneapolis musician that I simply adore. Stumbling across him playing one night at a crowded tiny bar, I was immediately captivated. He didn’t have any CDs for sale that night and I went home and bought his album off of Bandcamp. This singer-songwriter has been playing in the local music scene for a number of years, fusing folk-inspired melodies infused with lo-fi rock. His lyrics cover the spectrum from devastating to hopeful. In 2016, Elwell is changed his musical path and has begun to incorporate electronica into his already darkly-tinged tracks. Releasing one single on April 8th, this has quickly been a favorite of mine on Strawberry Tongue. He’s got a new album to release, but, has not set a date yet. Tracks featured include some older material: “Home,” and “Brave Soul,” along with the shimmering, brand new track, “Closer.”

H ø R D is a darkwave project of Sebastien Carl from Bordeaux, France. A video artist and musician, he is inspired by film noir and relies on heavy themes. His music paints a bleak sonic landscape with dense, rich layers that is intense and exhilarating. Upon first listen you are drawn into a dark realm that pulls you into an undertow of breathtaking synth washes. On the fantastic Anywave label, the music of H ø R D is simply stunning. Tracks featured: “Speak,” “Let Them Burn,” and “Heart Part III.”

Secret Destroyers is an electropop project of Dion Torres from Denver Colorado. Sliding easily between darkwave and synthpop, many of these songs feel like the soundtrack of a post-apocalyptic society. On the #WEATNU (We Are The New Underground) label, you can find a lot of his catalog on Soundcloud. Tracks featured: “Cold Was The Ground,” and “Beautiful Noise.”

Schonwald plays a dreamy shoegaze that is simply mesmerizing.  Creating huge sonic walls with guitars, synths and drum machines, their sound is both minimalist and evocative. Alessandra Gismondi (vocals, bass) and Luca Bandini (guitar, synth and drum machine) are an Italian duo that finds inspiration in the fine mist that blankets the swamps and lagoons in their hometown of Ravenna. On the Anywave label, tracks featured: “Lower Lovers,” “Directions,” and “Inland.”
